Here you can find information about the different materials we use to give you an idea of what is available. We are always of course more than happy to advise!

Bronze/Copper:

We don't often work with these so we'd be delighted for the opportunity! We often have these in stock, which means we can get started on your piece immediately. We often use these to add delicate details to scalemaille or larger steel or aluminium pieces.
Bronze and copper should not be submerged in water for long periods of time as the metal may weaken or become discoloured, making them less ideal for everyday wear. For a more water-resistant option, consider anodised aluminium in a similar colour. Brass and copper can also be more expensive than steel.

Aluminium:

Shiny and lightweight, these are the perfect choice for larger pieces. It is a very versatile material, coming in a variety of colours and sizes. Aluminium is also cheaper to import and faster to work with than other materials, making it a very budget-friendly option.
We would not recommend aluminium for smaller pieces such as chokers or bracelets, as it can be less durable than steel or titanium. Many customers also prefer the feel of heavier materials in smaller pieces.

Stainless Steel:

Stainless steel is another very popular choice among customers. The shiny gunmetal colour provides a depth to more complex weaves that isn't present in paler metals. It is extremely durable and can be worn without issue in the shower, pool, gym... The weight of a steel piece can also be very satisfying. While it is slightly more expensive than aluminium, but is still a very budget-friendly option.
Stainless steel only comes in two colours: gunmetal-silver or black, which makes it less versatile.

Brass:

Brass rings are excellent choices for those looking for gold-coloured jewellery without the price tag.
Brass is a more expensive option than steel or aluminium, and we will often have to order rings especially for a project, which may increase the timeline for your commission.

Aluminium:

The vast majority of scalemaille pieces we create use aluminium scales, simply because of the available colours. Unless you specifically request a different material, we will use aluminium scales in your commission.

Polycarbonate scales:

Polycarbonate scales come in two varieties: translucent, which create an unusual and unique effect, and glow-in-the-dark. These are very lightweight and durable, making them ideal for party-wear or cosplay details.
